Since Summer 2010, the School of Liberal Arts & Education has logged Hampton University undergrads from 50 states into Blackboard Learn for the B.A. Degree in Paralegal Studies to develop the logical thinking skills attorneys seek for case assistance. Directed by Dr. Kim Luckes, the 122-credit, SACS-accredited online sequence examines basic law practices for NALA Certified Paralegal exam prep. Expect accelerated nine-week courses like Economics, Legal Writing, Domestic Relations, and Criminal Law at a 13:1 student-professor ratio. Seniors can complete the PLSO 401 Internship at Woods Rogers, Marks & Harrison, GibsonMoore, McGuireWoods, Smith Law Center, the U.S. Justice Department, and more.
Thirty credits are transferable from the 12-month Online Certificate in Paralegal Studies that skips general education courses. Exclusively in King Hall, students could also pursue the Pre-Law Track to a B.A. Degree in Political Science. Chaired by Dr. Maureen Elgersman Lee, an AASLH Award of Merit recipient, this 124-credit traditional program spans topics from Judicial Processes to Civil Rights. Hampton opportunities include joining Pre-Law Club, securing London’s Parliamentary Internship, volunteering in the College Poll Worker Program, attending the CLEO Summer Institute, taking LSAT Prep, and engaging in the Center for Public Policy.
About Hampton University
Hampton University originated on April 1, 1868, when Union Bvt. Brigadier General Samuel C. Armstrong started the Hampton Agricultural & Industrial School by the Emancipation Oak. Chartered in 1870 under the Morrill Land-Grant Act, it taught former slaves, including educator Booker T. Washington. In 1878, Hampton began a Native American Program to teach 70 coeds once imprisoned during the Red River War. By July 1930, Dr. George Phenix renamed it Hampton Institute to expand college-level degrees. Accredited in 1932, Hampton added 12 buildings to the 314-acre Chesapeake Bay campus during Dr. Jerome Holland’s 1950s tenure. In 1984, the Hampton University name was adopted as doctoral degrees were added. Hampton University Accreditation Details
On April 16, 2008, Hampton University hosted an on-site evaluation visit from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to reaffirm Level VI accreditation in January 2009 under its 12th president, Dr. William R. Harvey, who earned the Inaugural HBCU Lifetime Achievement Award. Located 573 miles southwest via Interstate 85 in Decatur, the legitimate 11-state Lower Atlantic accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Education Department for extending Federal Title-IV eligibility to Hampton’s 10 associate, 50 bachelor’s, 29 master’s, and eight doctoral options. Hampton University is licensed by the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) and National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). Note the B.A. Degree in Paralegal Studies is not approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) Committee on Paralegals though.
Hampton University Application Requirements
Getting into Hampton University is labeled “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s because only 4,391 of the 12,130 Fall 2017 applicants were victorious for 36 percent acceptance. First-year Pirates seeking the B.A. Degree in Paralegal Studies must finish a high school diploma with 17 Carnegie units. This includes four English, three Math, two Lab Science, two Social Science, two Foreign Language, and six Elective units. Valid GED certificates with composite scores totaling over 2250 qualify too. Test-optional admission requires excelling academically with a 3.3 GPA or better and class ranking in the top 10 percent. Otherwise, cumulative grades down to 2.5 during grades 9-12 are admitted. On average, Hampton freshmen present a 1090 SAT and 22 ACT score. Taking the SAT General on the 1600 scale after March 2016 is mandatory. Transferring into the School of Liberal Arts & Education necessitates 15+ accredited non-remedial credits. Good disciplinary standing and minimum 2.5 GPAs at previous colleges are required. Bachelor of Arts candidates can enter the Freddye T. Davy Honors College with at least a 3.2 GPA. Foreign students with I-20 visas are welcomed with 525 TOEFL and 6.5 IELTS scores or higher.
Hampton University enforces freshman deadlines of October 15th for Early Action and March 1st for Regular Decision. Hopeful B.A. Degree in Paralegal Studies transfers apply until May 1st for Fall or October 15th for Spring entry. Non-U.S. residents supply materials before April 1st and September 1st respectively. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, Hampton University is charging full-time B.A. Degree in Political Science: Pre-Law Track students $11,881 per term or $23,762 annually. Excess credits incur $398 each. Traditional undergrads pay the $2,690 comprehensive fee, $250 technology fee, and $958 insurance premium. Living at the Commonwealth campus’ dorms like DuBois Hall adds $6,126 to $7,326 yearly. Standard meal plans for Pirate Grill are $5,652 extra. HU budgets $1,100 for textbooks and $2,800 for miscellaneous needs. Annual bachelor’s attendance equals around $40,559 on-site and $29,841 if commuting. However, Hampton Online bills B.A. Degree in Paralegal Studies majors $300 per credit with a $50 technology and $100 registration fee per term. The four-year online total is roughly $38,400. Earning the Certificate in Paralegal Studies costs significantly less at $9,300.
