Tiffin University once offered a Bachelor of Arts in Paralegal Studies program that taught students how to work as legal assistants and paralegals. Though it removed that program from its curriculum, the university still offers some programs for students with an interest in legal assisting. The most popular of those is the university’s justice administration program. Graduates can find work as paralegals, court bailiffs, caseworkers, and probation officers. Online students will take seven-week classes that the university offers once every two months. Traditional students will take 15-week courses that start every August and January. The university also offers an extended learning program that includes seven-week hybrid courses.
Justice administration majors must take a minimum of 121 credits of classes from Tiffin University, though they can transfer some credits to the program. They will also take 36 credits of justice administration courses, including Emergency Organizations and Management, Juvenile Justice Systems, Crime Analysis, and Correctional Thought and Procedures. The program includes a Senior Capstone in Criminal Justice, which is a requirement for graduation. Students will learn about one specific topic in this class and write a final paper on that subject.
Another program that paralegal students may find appealing is the university’s criminal behavior program. This program features seven-week classes and asks that students take two courses during each of the six semesters the university offers. The 33 credits of crime and legal classes they take include Multicultural Issues in Society, Correctional Strategies, Psychology of Violence and Aggressions and Drugs and Society. Students can learn more about criminal thought and behavior in the university’s forensic psychology program too. Other programs that provide students with a strong understanding of the law and legal terminology include the Tiffin University programs in law enforcement, corrections, and criminalistics.
About Tiffin University
Located in the small town of Tiffin, Ohio, Tiffin University is a private university. Established as the Commercial College in 1888, it served as a branch of Heidelberg University and offered business classes and courses in similar subjects. Once the school separated from that university in 1917, it moved to a new campus in the heart of the city’s downtown area and became Tiffin University.
Tiffin now offers hybrid programs for local students who want the resources available on its campus. Some of these programs are suitable for students from other states who can visit the campus a few times a year for residency sessions. The university also offers traditional programs and has multiple dormitories for students to live in as they finish their degrees. As other colleges and universities established online programs, Tiffin added some of those programs to its curriculum to meet the needs of new students. Though Tiffin has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students, only 1,600 are residential students.
Tiffin University Accreditation Details
All the business programs offered by Tiffin University have accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Tiffin also has full or regional accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). Also called institutional accreditation, this is what lets Tiffin set degree and graduation requirements and to accept credits that incoming and transfer students earned from other programs and schools. Tiffin University can apply for financial aid and use the funds given to them by the government because of the university’s regional acceptance.
Tiffin University Application Requirements
Tiffin University offers programs for students who just finished high school and those who spent a few years or more working in the field. All students must meet the same requirements, including those applying to an online program and those who want to live and work on the Tiffin campus. They need to have a minimum of a high school diploma and a grade point average of 2.25 or higher. This GPA should be unweighted and not include any AP or similar classes that the student took. Those who do not have a high school diploma can submit either a GED score or a transcript. Tiffin accepts transfer students and allows them to transfer more than 12 credits from another school. Those students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and grades of C or higher in the courses they want to transfer.
As part of the application process, the university recommends that students request more information from its website and that they speak to one of its admissions counselors. Those counselors can help students with the FAFSA and the university’s application. Traditional students can also schedule a campus visit through one of the counselors and make arrangements to attend one or more classes and even spend the night in a dormitory. Tiffin does not charge an application fee and allows online and traditional students to use the same online application.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students who want to live on the Tiffin campus must choose between four meal plans and eight room types. One meal plan provides students with 75 meals each semester and costs $1,860 per year. The largest meal plan gives students unlimited meals on the campus and costs $5,360 per year. Tiffin offers apartments and dorm rooms with or without AC. It also allows students to choose between a single or private room and a double/shared room. Students pay $5,560 to $7,160 each year for one of these rooms. Tuition at the university is $857 per credit hour, and students pay a total of $25,710 each year for tuition and fees. It also estimates that students will pay up to $1,000 a year for their textbooks. Online students pay only $460 per credit hour.
The scholarships awarded by the university each year provide students without thousands of dollars. Tiffin has a grant that gives students $3,000 and a trustee scholarship that awards them $12,000 a year. These scholarships only go to first-year traditional students, though there are some programs for transfer students too. The university also offers a discount to students who are members of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (AICU). In addition to scholarships, students can apply for financial aid from the Ohio and federal governments through the FAFSA. The FAFSA helps online students apply for some of the same aid given to residential students, including subsidized loans and Pell grants. Financial aid packages help students who want to enroll in the criminal and legal programs offered by Tiffin University.
